Authorship Standards
Last updated: March 5, 2026
Purpose
AIMRO's Authorship Standards outline the levels of human creative involvement in works registered on our platform. AIMRO registers both AI-assisted works with meaningful human contribution — which may be eligible for copyright protection under U.S. Copyright Office guidance — and 100% AI-generated works, which, while not currently eligible for U.S. copyright registration, can still be licensed globally and generate royalties through our licensing partnerships.
The Human Authorship Requirement
U.S. copyright law protects original works of authorship created by humans. The Copyright Office has confirmed that purely AI-generated output — produced without meaningful human creative control — cannot be registered for copyright. However, works that combine AI-generated elements with sufficient human authorship may be protected to the extent of the human contributions.
AIMRO recognizes that 100% AI-generated works — even without copyright eligibility in the United States — hold significant commercial value and can be licensed anywhere in the world. AIMRO registers these works to enable creators to collect royalties through global licensing agreements.
AIMRO categorizes registered works into two tiers: AI-Assisted Works (with documented human creative contribution, potentially eligible for U.S. copyright) and 100% AI-Generated Works (eligible for global licensing and royalty collection, but not U.S. copyright registration).
What Qualifies as Human Creative Contribution
The following activities demonstrate the kind of creative involvement that supports copyrightability:
Prompt Engineering & Iteration
Crafting detailed, specific prompts and making intentional creative decisions across multiple iterations to shape the musical output. This includes specifying instrumentation, mood, structure, tempo, harmonic language, and stylistic references.
Selection & Arrangement
Curating from multiple AI-generated outputs, selecting the strongest elements, and arranging them into a cohesive composition. This editorial judgment — deciding what to keep, discard, reorder, or combine — constitutes creative authorship.
Post-Production & Mixing
Applying human-directed equalization, effects processing, mixing, mastering, or other audio manipulation that shapes the final sonic character of the work.
Lyric Writing
Composing original lyrics — whether independently or through iterative refinement of AI suggestions — that are combined with AI-generated musical elements.
Melodic or Harmonic Modification
Altering, extending, transposing, or re-harmonizing AI-generated musical content to create new original expression beyond the raw AI output.
Structural Composition
Determining the overall architecture of the work — intro, verses, chorus, bridge, outro, transitions, dynamics, and emotional arc.
100% AI-Generated Works
AIMRO accepts 100% AI-generated works for registration. While these works are not currently eligible for U.S. copyright protection, they can be licensed globally and generate royalties through AIMRO's licensing partnerships. When registering a 100% AI-generated work:
- You must clearly designate the work as 100% AI-generated during registration
- You must disclose all AI tools used in the creation of the work
- The work will be registered for licensing and royalty collection only, not for copyright registration
- You must have the legal right to use the AI tool's output for commercial purposes per that tool's terms of service
What Does Not Meet Our Standards
The following activities are not permitted on the AIMRO platform:
- Re-uploading or slightly modifying another creator's registered work
- Registering works created using AI tools in violation of those tools' terms of service
- Claiming human authorship for a work that is 100% AI-generated
- Providing false or misleading information about the creation process
The Creative Contribution Statement
For AI-assisted works, AIMRO requires a human creative contribution statement — a written description (minimum 20 characters) of the specific creative decisions and modifications you made. For 100% AI-generated works, a description of the AI tools and process used is required instead. The contribution statement serves as:
- Your disclosure of how human authorship was exercised in the work
- A record supporting the work's eligibility for copyright registration with the U.S. Copyright Office
- Evidence of your creative involvement should any dispute arise
Example of a strong contribution statement:
"I generated 12 variations in Suno using detailed prompts specifying a minor-key ambient texture with evolving pad layers at 72 BPM. I selected and combined sections from three outputs, restructured the arrangement into a 4-minute arc with a dynamic build, applied custom reverb and sidechain compression in Ableton, and wrote the vocal melody and lyrics independently."
AI Tool Disclosure
Consistent with U.S. Copyright Office guidance, AIMRO requires creators to disclose all AI tools used in the creation of each work. This transparency is essential for maintaining the integrity of our catalog and ensuring compliance with copyright registration requirements. Failure to disclose AI tool usage may result in removal of the work and suspension of your account.
Review & Enforcement
AIMRO reviews submitted works for compliance with these standards. Our review process considers:
- The specificity and credibility of the creative contribution statement
- The nature and extent of human involvement described
- Consistency between the stated contributions and the characteristics of the work
Works that do not meet these standards may be rejected during review or removed from the platform. Repeated violations may result in account suspension. Creators may appeal a rejection by providing additional documentation of their creative process.
Evolving Standards
As the U.S. Copyright Office, courts, and legislators continue to refine the legal framework around AI-generated works, AIMRO will update these Authorship Standards accordingly. We encourage creators to maximize and document their human creative involvement in every work — not only to meet our current standards, but to future-proof their catalog as the legal landscape evolves.
